In the year 1992, Karnataka State Open University situated in Mysuru, is a State Public University established by the act of the State Legislature and was brought into activeness on 1st June 1996. Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) was founded on June 1st, 1996, with the approval of Excellency the Honorable Governor of Karnataka. The university was officially recognized as a full-fledged university in the 1996 academic year by government notice no. ED 1 UOV 95, dated February 12th, 1996 (KSOU Act – 1992). The act's goals were to establish an open university at the state level, support the development of open universities and distance learning programs within the state's educational framework, and coordinate and establish the standards for the ODL system in higher education.

In the year 1969, This university established an Institute of Correspondence Programs and Continuing Education at the University of Mysore.

Karnataka State Open University MBA Distance Education program

At the Postgraduate level, this university also provides a two-year MBA course. This MBA course is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The medium of study for the MBA course is 'English' only. However, the semester examination can be done either in English or Kannada. Karnataka State Open University MBA admission is completely based on the performance of students in the last qualifying examination. The MBA course provided by this university has 6 papers in each semester. In the first year of study, the students will deal with the general papers, whereas they can choose for specialisation in the second year of their study. The University provides seven specialisations under this course.
