Abou Guru Nanak Dev University 

Guru Nanak Dev University was established in Amritsar on November 24, 1969, to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is both a residential and an affiliated university. In conceiving the future direction of the university, the objectives enshrined in the Guru Nanak Dev University Act of 1969 emphasised that the new university would provide provision for imparting education and promoting research in the humanities, learned professions, and sciences, especially applied nature and technology. The university successfully caters to twenty thousand students in various faculties of university campuses and institutional colleges. Guru Nanak Dev University is the first university in the region to introduce online admission to its courses, online counselling for state admissions, and a credit evaluation system. All results have been processed by computer, and the OMR (optical magnetic recognition) system is used, which brings greater efficiency and transparency. It is again the first university in the region to have a computerised examination and registration system. Students now have constant access to their results through the SMS service. According to a recent 'India Today' survey, the university rose to the 16th position in the top 50 universities in the country and achieved the 11th position out of 500 universities in publications in science. The university has won the country's highest sporting award, the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy, 21 times.
